Day One, Friday Oct 15, 2021

8:00 am – Depart New Philadelphia, OH for the Equus Run Vineyards in Midway, Kentucky, which is about a 5 hour drive. Amidst picturesque thoroughbred horse farms, historic stone fences, and the quaint charm of Midway, Equus Run is nestled on 38 acres in the heart of central Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region and was voted by CNN Travel as a Must-See Hidden Treasure of the US. This private tasting and tour package allows a more in-depth look at the winemaking and vineyard processes and includes the private wine tasting, as well as, a fruit, cheese, and cracker reception with an included box lunch.  The owner, Cynthia Bohn, will greet and take you on a tour through the winery.  Cynthia is also on the board of the Shriners in Kentucky!

1:15 pm – Depart for the Woodford Reserve Distillery, about 20 minutes from Equus Run Vineyards, for a tour, tasting and gift shop visit. At Woodford Reserve Distillery,, now a National Historic Landmark, the art of making fine bourbon first took place in 1812. The history of bourbon is the history of Kentucky, is the history of the United States.

3:30 pm – Depart for the Historic Galt House for a 4:45 pm check-in. Located in downtown Louisville you are within walking distance of the riverfront as well as the downtown shops and museums. A free shuttle bus is also available for your use.  The Galt House Hotel Conservatory with Al J’s Lounge voted the best place to “Sit & Sip”,  spans Fourth Street and links the hotel’s SUITE Tower and RIVUE Tower. It is an impressive glass-domed great room modeled after the Crystal Palace in London and the Conservatory is decorated with tropical plants and contains an aviary with exotic and colorful songbirds.   This property offers shops, a spa, and a FABULOUS RIVER VIEW!

6:00 pm – We start this evening with the Whiskey Row History and Distillery Tour at Evan Williams where we will enjoy Bourbon tastings and a Bourbon Ball for each guest. Next, head to the basement where you must first guess the secret code correctly in order to gain access to the speakeasy, only then will the door attendant unlock the heavy steel vault door to let you inside.  The room you enter contains a beautiful wraparound cherry bar area and we will enjoy a private dinner complete with the famous “Louisville Hot Browns”. Guests will also have the opportunity to learn about local bourbon history from local historians and authors.

Day Two, Saturday October 16th, 2021

8:00 am – Breakfast is included at the Galt House

9:00 am – Start your day with the Frazier History Museum, which is the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center. The feature is the 32-minute “KENTUCKY SHOW”, an exciting, emotionally compelling large screen multi-media experience narrated by Ashley Judd that captures Kentucky’s people, culture, history, music, spirit, and more!  The show has received rave reviews and the gift shop offers some unique bourbon gifts and other trinkets.  The rest of the morning is free time to explore downtown Louisville! From the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, where you can watch the baseball bats being made, to Peerless Distillery, there is plenty to see and do.

12:30 pm – Depart for Maker’s Mark Distillery.

2:00 pm  Maker’s Mark® began with one family’s quest to create a bourbon they enjoyed drinking and sharing with friends. That’s hardly revolutionary today, but in 1953 it changed an industry. Whether you’re after a smooth, full-flavored bourbon to sip or something to use in your favorite cocktail, any of Maker’s Mark® expressions are a great place to start. Tour and tasting included.

5:00 pm – Check-in Hampton Inn and Suites, Bardstown.

6:00 pm Talbott Tavern for dinner. This historic tavern and Inn was opened in 1779 when Kentucky was still part of Virginia. Patrick Henry licensed it to operate, and French King Louis Phillippe stayed there in 1797. You can still see the murals that he painted.

Day Three, Sunday October 17, 2021

9:00 am – Depart for Old Friends Farm

10:00 am – Guided tour of Old Friends Farm – Retirement home.

In a little more than a decade Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, KY, has put a new face on the concept of equine aftercare.  Founded in 2003 by former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen, the organization has grown from a leased paddock and one horse to a 136-acre farm, with a herd of over 175 rescued and retired horses, Blowen had long believed that horses past their prime could still be valuable – money-earning, even—if the venue was right. And so Old Friends tested the concept by opening its doors to the public, inviting fans to revisit their turf heroes.  Now a “living-history museum of horse racing”, the farm attracts nearly 30,000 visitors annually who come to swoon over some Kentucky Derby and Preakness champions such as Silver Charm and War Emblem, each repatriated from stud duties overseas.

11:15 am – depart for Midway, Ky about 15 minutes away.

11:30 am – Lunch at Darlin’ Jeans Apple Cobbler Café in the heart of Midway, where the atmosphere is beautiful and rustic, and the equine art everywhere really makes it feel like home.  Noted for their hot brown and cobbler, here guests will be sure to enjoy a taste of Kentucky.

Following lunch, spend time walking the streets of Midway and peek into the boutiques which offers ample opportunities for adorable clothing, jewelry, fabulous purses, and hats. You may visit Freedman’s – officially the world’s premier maker of harnesses and to-die-for purses and assorted leather goods.  Stop into Savon Apothecary which offers the most amazing fragrances, items, and gifts.  You may just want to sit on a stool at the Old Fashioned Soda Fountain and wait for the TRAIN TO RUN THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF TOWN!   All of this in a one-block area!!

1:30 pm – Depart for the Buffalo Trace Distillery which is about 20 minutes away.  Buffalo Trace has the best gift shop with bourbon creams, bourbon-infused coffees, bourbon barbecue sauces, and other great gifts, which is a perfect stop for the end of the tour.
