This morning we will depart Columbus, OH and after picking up our tour guide, we’ll head north for Buffalo, NY. Upon arrival, we will check into the Embassy Suites by Hilton Downton Buffalo. The hotel is a new property built to green construction standards. While staying here, we’ll be treated to cityscape views, have access to WIFI, enjoy made-to-order breakfast, plus a nightly manager’s reception featuring complimentary appetizers and cocktails. Each spacious suite features separate living rooms and bedrooms. Tonight we’ll be having our welcome dinner in the hotel’s dining room while a guest speaker talks to us about the history of the city of Buffalo. (Welcome Dinner)
Day Two: Friday, October 15th
After a hearty breakfast, we depart the hotel for a city tour of Buffalo aboard an authentic British double-decker bus. This city tour will show you both the past and present Buffalo along with what the future holds for this great city. Once our tour is complete we’ll board our motorcoach and take a 10-minute drive to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House located in the historic Parkside neighborhood. The Martin House introduces visitors to Frank Lloyd Wright’s innovative design concepts that defined his Prairie-style ideal. A certified docent will lead us through the primary first-floor rooms of the main house, the pergola, conservatory, and the carriage house. Our tour will conclude at the Martin House Museum Store, where exceptional selections of gifts can be found. Next, we will be on our way to the Roycroft Campus, but first, there will be a stop for lunch on our own before the campus tour begins. Roycroft was a reformist community of craft workers and artists which formed part of the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States. The Roycroft Campus is the best preserved and most complete complex of buildings remaining in the United States of the “guilds” that evolved as centers of craftsmanship and philosophy during the late 19th century. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and contains 9 of the original 14 structures including the Inn, Chapel, Print Shop, Furniture Shop, and the Copper Shop. Here we will learn about the rich history of the arts and crafts movement while being able to shop for one-of-a-kind items in their beautiful and extensive gift shop. Following our campus visit, we will depart for dinner, and then it’s back to our hotel for a restful evening. (Breakfast)
Day Three: Saturday, October 16th
Rise and shine! After enjoying breakfast, we will take time to view the mighty Niagara Falls which is actually made up of three falls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls. The combined falls form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world. We will then make our way north to the Niagara Power Vista Experience, an exciting, interactive adventure from the New York Power Authority. Here we will be able to understand electricity through the eyes of the electricity pioneers Nikolai Tesla and Thomas Edison as well as modern-day scientists. We will see how the massive Robert Moses Dam plays a role in providing power to the Northeastern United States. Giant screens will let us experience the majesty and power of Niagara Falls, which plays an integral role in making power. Have a seat in their state-of-the-art simulated ride in the 4D Theatre to experience what goes into making electricity when you flip the switch. This visitors’ center features numerous exhibits about hydroelectricity. Be sure to enjoy the spectacular views from an observation deck 350 feet above the river. Afterward, we will be on our way to nearby Whirlpool State Park to see the natural whirlpools and rapids of the Niagara River. Take some time to enjoy this picturesque park and see one of the fascinating natural wonders of the Buffalo and Niagara region. Lunch will be on our own in the historic village of Lewiston, NY. We will be dropped off on Center Street where there are a number of unique restaurants for our dining pleasure. After lunch, we will head over to Elmwood Village for an afternoon of shopping. This neighborhood has a number of boutique stores from furniture to clothing and knickknacks of all sorts. Many of the stores are within walking distance from each other. Following an afternoon of shopping, we will make our way to dinner before heading back to the hotel for the evening. (Breakfast)
Day Four: Sunday, October 17th
Bags out this morning as after breakfast we will make our way to Chautauqua, NY for the Chautauqua Belle Luncheon Cruise. This historical cruise tells of the late 1800’s time period when Chautauqua was in its infancy. We will learn about Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Lewis Miller, and many other industrialists who vacationed here. In addition to learning the history of the area, we’ll enjoy a BBQ chicken lunch while experiencing the beautiful tree lines filled with fall foliage and get a “front-row” view of the million-dollar plus mansions as we run the shoreline of Chautauqua’s most exclusive neighborhoods. From there, we will depart on our way home to Columbus, OH thus concluding our tour of Buffalo. (Breakfast & Lunch Cruise)
