Day One: Wednesday, September 23, 2020
Depart from New Philadelphia, OH for Wild, Wonderful West Virginia. We will arrive in the afternoon in Elkins, West Virginia and check into the Isaac Jackson Hotel. Tonight we will enjoy dinner and a show at the Gandy Dancer Theater, West Virginia’s ONLY Branson – style dinner theater. This theater which is nestled in the heart of the WV mountains, features music from the 50’s to present day, country, gospel, rock and roll as well as patriotic. (Dinner)
Day Two: Thursday, September 24, 2020
This morning you will enjoy a hot American Breakfast Buffet before a day filled with adventure. We start off the day at the Green Bank Observatory, as it’s now known since it’s no longer part of the National Radio Observatory network. This is home to the Robert C Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) – the world’s largest completely steerable radio telescope, as well as many other functional and decommissioned radio telescopes. There are over 15 different telescopes on site and almost all of them are operational. The GBT is located in the National Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,0000 – square mile area that covers the eastern half of West Virginia. Upon arrival, we’ll get a short presentation about what the telescope does and then a demonstration as to how much electromagnetic interference your own cellular device emits. Afterwards, we’ll be directed to a tour van/bus, where they will drive us about 500 ft before asking us to turn off all electronic devices! We will ride to the Green Bank Telescope where the size of it will surely amaze you!
Next, it’s off to the Cass Scenic RR. This is the same line built in 1901 to haul lumber to the mill in Cass. The locomotives are the same Shay locomotives used in Cass during that time. Many of the passenger cars are old logging flat cars that have been refurbished. Our trip to Bald Knob is approximately a 22 mile ride through the mountains of West Virginia. At an elevation of 4,842 feet, Bald Knob is the third highest point in WV. The Bald Knob overlook offers spectacular views (on a clear day) into two states and into the valley below, home to the Green Bank Observatory. A “King of the Road” hobo lunch will be provided to enjoy with our ride as well.
After a long day of WV adventures, we will return to Elkins and enjoy a completely different dinner and show at the Gandy Dancer Theater. (Breakfast, Boxed Lunch, Dinner)
Day Three: Friday, September 25, 2020
After a delicious breakfast buffet, we will depart for home with memories of the spectacular views we saw in our neighboring mountain state. (Breakfast)
